The Scottish Recovery Network provides support, information and access to resources for people recovering from mental health issues. In 2006 they conducted a narrative research project and compiled a book of first-person accounts of journeys of recovery. They asked us to turn these stories into an audio book and podcast series.
As it was important to preserve the anonymity of the storytellers, we used actors’ voices when recording the audio book. We chose a range of different Scottish male and female voices of varying ages to demonstrate the diversity of those affected by mental health issues, one in four people in Scotland.
The audio book, which was made available as a CD, was very well received by the Scottish Recovery Network and its members. To extend distribution, we turned the twelve stories from the audio book into a four-part podcast series. One episode was published at the same time as the SRN’s newsletter.
