Scottish Ballet: Romeo and Juliet Webcasts

In 2014, Inner Ear produced a series of live webcasts for Scottish Ballet’s acclaimed production of Romeo & Juliet. These webcasts gave audiences exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the creative process, including cast rehearsals and interviews with dancers, creatives and the company’s artistic team.

Working in partnership with Scottish Ballet, we captured the journey from rehearsal room to stage, sharing unique content online that deepened audience engagement and broadened the reach of this celebrated ballet. Our team managed the technical set-up, delivered multi-camera streaming and facilitated live audience interaction through web and social media platforms.

Viewers of the webcast series experienced:

  • Live rehearsals with principal dancers and the ensemble
  • Insightful interviews with choreographers and musicians
  • Backstage footage and creative insight
  • Opportunities to ask questions and interact in real-time
  • Highlights from the rehearsals

The Romeo & Juliet webcast project demonstrated Inner Ear’s commitment to making the performing arts more accessible and inclusive through innovative digital storytelling and live streaming. The positive response from audiences highlighted the potential of digital platforms to connect arts organisations with new and existing fans, extending the impact of live performance beyond the theatre.

For performing arts companies, live streaming rehearsals extracts additional value from an activity that is already essential to the creative process. By opening up the rehearsal room to online audiences, companies can:

  • Maximise existing resources: Share what happens behind the scenes without extra staging costs or disruption.
  • Deeper audience engagement: Invite viewers into the creative journey, building loyalty and a stronger connection with the performers.
  • Broaden reach and accessibility: Enable supporters, schools and international audiences to experience the creative process wherever they are.
  • Enhance marketing and education: Use rehearsal footage for promotional content or as an educational tool for students, teachers and emerging artists.

This approach makes the most of every rehearsal, turning routine practice into a strategic opportunity for engagement and outreach.
