Live-streamed chamber music in unusual spaces. Explore the Edinburgh Quartet’s Late Sessions, produced by Inner Ear in December 2012.
The Edinburgh Quartet, one of Scotland’s foremost chamber ensembles, has a rich tradition of performance and outreach. In 2013, the Quartet worked closely with Inner Ear on a series of digital innovations which included their “Late Sessions” — a series of concerts and features broadcast online via Livestream.com (which has since been acquired by Vimeo), produced by Inner Ear, that took their enthralling performances into unusual spaces to engage new audiences in different ways.
The critically acclaimed Edinburgh Quartet celebrated the music of its Patron, James MacMillan, CBE, in a series of live performances dedicated to his work. As part of the series we streamed a live performance by the group from the prestigious Grand Ballroom at Sloans in Glasgow on 12 December 2013.
Working closely with the musicians and their manager, Inner Ear delivered high-quality multi-camera live streams and managed real-time audience interaction across platforms. Each session offered a mix of performances and talks, providing insight into the Quartet’s repertoire and process.
The series was warmly received by regular concertgoers and new digital audiences alike, and attracted new fans in person and online. Each event was watched live by hundreds and replayed by many more. The success of these sessions demonstrated the potential of digital performance to reach beyond traditional venues and showcase non-traditional performances spaces.
This concert was challenging to capture because the venue is dark and moody, which is part of the atmosphere and suited the vibe of the performance. The venue and musicians didn’t want us to bring in video lights so our crew got creative with candle placement and managed to get enough illumination to convey the magic of the show without compromising its integrity (which is Inner Ear’s standard mode of operating).
